Backpack Size & Capacity Guide — Litres, Dimensions and Fit
How capacity is really measured, and how to specify a size that fits the person carrying it.
Capacity is the least standardised number in this industry. Two backpacks both labelled 25 L can differ by several litres, because there is no agreed method for measuring the volume of an irregular shape. Some factories measure the main compartment only; some fill the bag with beads; some estimate from the pattern.
We give you dimensions as well as litres, and we tell you which parts of the bag the litres include. This guide explains how to read those numbers, what size actually fits your buyer, and the three dimensions that matter more than volume.

The Three Dimensions That Matter
Volume tells you how much goes in. These tell you whether it works.

Depth is where most specifications go wrong. Adding depth is the easiest way to add litres on paper, and the worst way to add them in use — the load moves further from the wearer's centre of gravity and the bag feels heavier than it is. Add height before depth wherever the fit allows.
Dimension convention. We quote H × W × D in centimetres, measured on the finished bag. Tell us if your specification uses a different order so nothing gets transposed.
Laptop Compartments
The most common warranty complaint on commuter backpacks is a laptop that does not fit, and it is almost always a specification problem rather than a production one.

Always add clearance. A sleeve cut to the exact device size will not accept the device once padding compresses and the bag is loaded. Roughly 2 cm on each dimension is a safe allowance.
Specify the actual model if you can. Screen size in inches is a diagonal measurement and tells us nothing reliable about the footprint — two 15.6" laptops can differ by more than a centimetre. If your buyers carry a specific machine, name it.
Suspended sleeves protect better. A sleeve that stops short of the base means the laptop does not take the impact when the bag is set down. It costs almost nothing to specify and prevents the most common damage.
Fit for Children
Getting this wrong has consequences beyond returns, so we raise it whenever a school programme comes through.
- The pack should not extend above the shoulder line or below the hips. A bag that is too long forces the wearer to lean forward.
- Width should stay within the shoulders. Wider bags catch on doorways and on other children.
- A chest strap matters more than it looks. It keeps the shoulder straps in place and stops the load pulling backwards. It is a small addition to the specification.
- Padded shoulder straps with adequate width. Narrow straps concentrate load and dig in, regardless of how good the fabric is.
- Size by age band, not by one universal size. If your programme covers a wide age range, two sizes will always outperform one compromise size.
Getting the Size Right Before Bulk
Send us a reference bag if you have one. Measuring an existing bag you like is faster and more accurate than describing dimensions in words, and it removes the ambiguity in how each side measures volume.
Check the sample loaded, not empty. An empty bag tells you the shape. A bag loaded with the contents your buyer will actually carry tells you whether the size works.
Sampling runs 7–15 days and bulk production 15–30 days. Dimension changes are straightforward at sample stage and expensive once bulk material has been cut, so resolve size in sampling.

How is backpack capacity in litres measured? There is no industry-standard method, which is why two bags labelled the same capacity can differ noticeably. What size backpack do I need for a laptop? A 20–30 L pack suits most commuter and laptop programmes. Should I add depth or height to increase capacity? Add height wherever fit allows. Depth adds litres most easily on paper but moves the load away from the wearer's back, which makes the bag feel heavier than it is and pulls them backwards. Height keeps the load close to the body.

Will the bag be exactly the dimensions I specify? Sewn products carry a small natural tolerance, so finished dimensions sit very close to specification rather than exactly on it. This is why we recommend confirming size on the physical sample before bulk production.
