Backpack Fabric Guide — Denier, Coatings and What Actually Matters
What the numbers mean, and which ones change how your bag performs.
Fabric is the first specification that gets decided and the one buyers understand least. Most briefs arrive with either nothing at all, or a number copied from a competitor's product page — 600D, 1680D — with no sense of what it changes.
We cut and sew in our own workshop in Baigou, which means we see the difference between two fabrics long before the buyer does: how they behave under the needle, where they fray, which ones hold a shape and which ones go limp after a season. This guide is what we tell customers when they ask us to choose for them.
Denier — What the Number Actually Means
Denier (D) measures the weight of the yarn, not the strength of the finished fabric. A higher number means a heavier, thicker yarn — which usually means more durability and more weight, but not always in a straight line. Weave density and yarn quality matter just as much.

The most common mistake: specifying 1680D for a school backpack because it sounds better. It adds weight a child has to carry, costs more, and the bag will outlive the design long before the fabric matters.
Two fabrics at the same denier are not equal. Weave tightness, yarn quality and coating all change the result. This is why a sample matters more than a spec sheet.
Nylon or Polyester
These are the two base fibres for almost every backpack, and the choice is genuinely a trade-off rather than one being better.
Polyester holds colour better and resists UV fading, which is why it dominates school, promotional and retail bags that sit under lights or in sunlight. It is more economical, takes print well, and is stable in humidity.
Nylon is stronger and more abrasion-resistant at the same weight, with a softer, more premium hand. It fades faster in strong sun and absorbs more moisture. It suits outdoor, technical and premium products where strength-to-weight matters more than colour stability.
A practical rule: if the bag lives indoors or in a shop window, polyester. If it lives outside and gets dragged around, nylon.
Ripstop is a weave rather than a fibre — a grid of reinforcing threads that stops a small tear from running. It is available in both nylon and polyester, adds very little weight, and is worth specifying on anything that will meet sharp edges.
Coatings and Water Resistance
This is where buyer expectations most often go wrong, so it is worth being blunt.
Water resistant is not waterproof. Almost no backpack sold as waterproof actually is, because water enters through the zippers and the seams, not through the fabric. Unless a bag has welded seams and a sealed closure, it will let water in eventually.

What we recommend telling your buyers: describe the bag as water resistant and say what that means in practice. Overpromising on waterproofing is the fastest way to generate returns.
The Rest of the Bill of Materials
Fabric is what buyers ask about. These are what actually fail first.
- Zippers. The single most common failure point on a backpack. Coil zippers are lighter and flexible; moulded-tooth zippers are stronger and better for main compartments under load. Size matters — #5 for typical compartments, #8 for heavy-duty. If your specification requires a particular branded zipper, tell us and Anna will confirm availability.
- Webbing. Straps and handles. Width and weave density determine whether it holds shape or curls. Cheap webbing on a good bag is a false economy.
- Buckles and hardware. Plastic hardware quality varies enormously at the same appearance. This is not visible in a photo and is very visible after six months.
- Foam and back panel. EVA or moulded foam with a mesh face determines comfort more than any other component. A well-shaped back panel is what separates a bag that gets carried from one that gets left.
- Mesh. Spacer mesh on shoulder straps and back panels for airflow. Cheaper flat mesh flattens and stops working.
- Lining. Usually 150D–210D polyester. A light colour makes the inside of the bag visible, which buyers appreciate more than they say.
- Recycled polyester (rPET). Available as a material choice. We make no certification claims of any kind. If your programme requires certified recycled content, raise it with Anna before you specify it, and verify any supplier's documentation independently — this applies to every supplier, not only us.

Before You Finalise Your Specification
Ask for a fabric swatch. Colour, hand and stiffness are not communicable on a screen. A swatch costs almost nothing and prevents the most expensive kind of surprise.
Approve on the physical sample. Our sampling window is 7–15 days, and bulk production runs 15–30 days. Use the sampling stage to check the fabric in your hands, not to check the drawing.
Tell us the failure you are worried about. "It has to survive a school year" or "it gets thrown in a truck bed" tells us more than a denier number. We will match the specification to the actual use.
FAQ
What does 600D mean on a backpack? Denier measures the weight of the yarn used in the fabric. 600D is the most widely used weight for school, commuter and promotional backpacks because it balances durability, weight, colour availability and cost. Higher denier means heavier yarn, which usually means more durability and more weight — but weave density and yarn quality affect the result just as much as the number.
Is nylon or polyester better for a backpack? Neither is better across the board. Polyester holds colour and resists UV fading, which suits school, promotional and retail bags. Nylon is stronger and more abrasion resistant at the same weight with a more premium hand, but fades faster in strong sun. Choose by where the bag lives rather than by which sounds better.
Can you make a waterproof backpack? Water enters a backpack through the zippers and seams rather than the fabric, so a coated fabric alone produces a water-resistant bag, not a waterproof one. Genuine waterproofing requires welded seams and a sealed closure. We would rather tell you this before you order than have you describe the bag inaccurately to your own buyers.
What is ripstop and do I need it? Ripstop is a weave with a grid of reinforcing threads that stops a small tear from spreading. It is available in both nylon and polyester and adds very little weight. It is worth specifying on outdoor bags or anything likely to catch on sharp edges, and unnecessary on most indoor-use bags.

Does a higher denier always mean a better bag? No. A 1680D school backpack is heavier for a child to carry, costs more, and outlasts the design it was built for. Fabric should match the actual use. Zipper, webbing and hardware quality usually determine how long a bag lasts far more than denier does.
